HOW TO LOOK GREAT IN A HAT * PART ONE

I can hear some of you saying, "I like hats. But I don't look good in them." "Saying you don't look good in hats is like saying you don't look good in shoes" (Kelly Boler). While every hat is not for every woman, there is a hat for every woman who wants to wear one. All you have to do is understand which one is right for you.

You are ready to "toss your hat in the ring", but you have to find one first. Before you look in the store, you must look in the mirror at home. The crown of a hat should be any shape except the shape of your jaw line.

Understanding what that shape is will help you choose the most flattering crown shape. In reality, you are applying the same logic you use when buying any article of clothing. We all have styles that work best for our body shape; now we're focusing on our face.

Remember: The Crown is the part of the hat that is in direct contact with your head and gives you height; the brim is the outer rim that frames your face and gives you width.

Round: If your jaw line is round and you put on a hat with a rounded crown or down-turned brim, it exaggerates the fullness to your face. Slim it with broad brims and wide, square-shaped crowns. The crown should not be narrower than your face unless it is extended by trim. Set the brim at an angle to add length to your face.

Square: If your jaw line is square and you put on a hat with a square crown, you are over-emphasizing the angles to your face. Soften them by selecting rounded crowns. Wide or flared brims will also work, but don't forget to tilt them forward, and to one side.

Heart-Shaped: If your jaw line comes to a point, avoid pointy crowns (as a fedora) or sharp angles. Emphasize your eyes with a low crown, wider brim and wear brim at an angle.

Oval: Anything Goes!

There is no good or bad shape to one's face; it is what it is. Like every other part of the body, there are styles that are more flattering than others. As Milliner Vonda Parker says, "There is a hat for every woman, no matter how her face is shaped."
